    A Hessenberg Markov chain for fast fibre delay line length optimization

    In this paper we present an approach to compute the invariant vector of the N + 1 state Markov chain P presented in (Rogiest et al., Lecture Notes in Computer Science, NET-COOP 2007 Special Issue, pp. 4465:185-194) to determine the loss rate of an FDL buffer consisting of N lines, by solving a related Hessenberg system (i.e., a Markov chain skip-free in one direction). This system is obtained by inserting additional time instants in the sample paths of P and allows us to compute the loss rate for various FDL lengths by solving a single system. This is shown to be especially effective in reducing the computation time of the heuristic LRA algorithm presented in (Lambert et al., Proc. NAEC 2005, pp. 545-555) to optimize the FDL lengths, where improvements of several orders of magnitude can be realized

    Entrainment and chaos in a pulse-driven Hodgkin-Huxley oscillator

    The Hodgkin-Huxley model describes action potential generation in certain types of neurons and is a standard model for conductance-based, excitable cells. Following the early work of Winfree and Best, this paper explores the response of a spontaneously spiking Hodgkin-Huxley neuron model to a periodic pulsatile drive. The response as a function of drive period and amplitude is systematically characterized. A wide range of qualitatively distinct responses are found, including entrainment to the input pulse train and persistent chaos. These observations are consistent with a theory of kicked oscillators developed by Qiudong Wang and Lai-Sang Young. In addition to general features predicted by Wang-Young theory, it is found that most combinations of drive period and amplitude lead to entrainment instead of chaos. This preference for entrainment over chaos is explained by the structure of the Hodgkin-Huxley phase resetting curve.Comment: Minor revisions; modified Fig. 3; added reference

    IRAS observations of irregular galaxies

    Normal irregular galaxies seem to be unusual in having vigorous star formation yet lacking the many dark nebulae typical of spirals. The Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) observations of a large sample of irregulars are used to explore the dust contents of these galaxies. Compared to normal spirals, the irregulars generally have higher L sub IR/L sub B ratios, warmer f(100)/f(60) dust color temperatures, and lower globally-averaged dust/gas ratios. The relationship between the infrared data and various global optical properties of the galaxies is discussed

    Contaminant Interferences with SIMS Analyses of Microparticle Impactor Residues on LDEF Surfaces

    Elemental analyses of impactor residues on high purity surface exposed to the low earth orbit (LEO) environment for 5.8 years on Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) has revealed several probable sources for microparticles at this altitude, including natural micrometeorites and manmade debris ranging from paint pigments to bits of stainless steel. A myriad of contamination interferences were identified and their effects on impactor debris identification mitigated during the course of this study. These interferences included pre-, post-, and in-flight deposited particulate surface contaminants, as well as indigenous heterogeneous material contaminants. Non-flight contaminants traced to human origins, including spittle and skin oils, contributed significant levels of alkali-rich carbonaceous interferences. A ubiquitous layer of in-flight deposited silicaceous contamination varied in thickness with location on LDEF and proximity to active electrical fields. In-flight deposited (low velocity) contaminants included urine droplets and bits of metal film from eroded thermal blankets

    Searches for gamma ray emission from radio pulsars

    Searches were made for pulsed high energy (E 35 MeV) gamma radiation from 43 pulsars using the SAS-2 data base and radio parameters. No positive results were found, and the upper limits are consistent with the concept that gamma ray production efficiency increases with increasing apparent age. Two limits suggest that efficiency cannot be a simple function of apparent age beyond 10,000,000 years
